After almost a century of blurring the distinctions between Socialism and Communism, they are salivating at the prospects of using these skills against a self-professed "Democratic Socialist".
They have already signaled that there will be frequent use of the term "Bolshevik Socialist" which sounds really bad, even if it is out of context.
If Sanders wins the nomination, I suspect we will see ads, on a reel, informing us that Bernie is a descendant of Karl Marx, and heir to Joe Stalin's mantle.
Bernie has already spoken in favor of Sunday voting ... that ought to pi$$ them off. Republicans may have to cancel the cash bar after church ... you know, the one used for "small individual party donations".
ReplyDeleteGreg, that still doesn't address the actual threat. And, that's my fear in a successful Bernie nomination ... the political ignorance of our electorate. We're dealing in a ruthless, blood sport. Let us not forget the further paralyzing effect of congress if, at least one of the chambers is not recovered ... especially the one that confirms judges! I'm willing to settle for less than perfect. I know I frustrate you!
ReplyDeleteI'll make three comments. First, my reply to Herb was a veiled attempt at political humor ... apparently I failed in that attempt, so I will respond to Republican's attacks against Socialism with this next comment.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to really attack congressional Republicans for their Socialist remarks, I would start by mentioning that as Republicans in congress warn us of the evils of government-run health care, most of them are covered by taxpayer-funded government-run health care. You literally pay for their health care while they tell you that paying for your neighbors health care through a public option or single-payer system is socialism. They are 100% correct, it is socialism. They're just not telling you that they like their socialist health care, they just don't think you should have it. They are afraid you might like it better than the private insurance you have now that funds their campaigns and gives them money to push what is best for them and not for you. Members of congress are free to opt out of their evil government health care, but most of them don't because deep down, they like socialism too.
For my third comment, I'll address yours, Susanna. You seem to be putting forth the premise that if Bernie is nominated (proof that a majority of Democrats prefer him over Hillary), that the electorate won't support him. The Republican side of the electorate hates Hillary, so there won't be any support for her from them either. It will be a clear case of Democrats having to defeat Republicans regardless of who represents the Democrats. You also seem to be advocating the premise that if Bernie wins the nomination, that we won't regain either house of congress, and that control of the judgeship will remain in conservative hands, whereas, if Hillary wins we will gain at least one house of congress. Prove that correlation.
Every thing we say may be pure conjecture but I do think we should, in our analyses, take into account the present state of the Republican Party, and the very real possibility that their deep divisions may turn off enough of their voters to help carry out a large enough victory to change the political landscape. Problem may be that, because the American people have had almost a century of propaganda against Socialism Bernie may end up uniting the Republicans against him. Yes, it is conjecture but it is a valid point to consider in the mix of things.
