BIBLICAL MARRIAGE

Recent attacks, by Donald Trump, on Bill Clinton for sexual transgressions, some 20 years ago, might give credence to Conservative's efforts to return to traditional Biblical marriage.

Under Biblical law, a married man having sexual relations with an unmarried women was not committing adultery.  Bill could not be accused of  being an adulterer, Hillary could not be labeled an "enabler" and we might have been spared the regurgitation of the 90s vomit that we suffered ad nauseum, at the time.

There is something to be said for the Holy Bible, after all.

  1. The clash between science and religion has not shown that religion is false and science is true. It has shown that all systems of definition are relative to various purposes, and that none of them actually 'grasp' reality. Having said that, I offer this thought on the subject:

"No one in their right mind would let a first-century dentist fill their children’s teeth. Why, then, do we allow first-century theologians to fill our children’s minds?" ~ Michael Dowd

I, personally, see religions in this context: Religion is fundamentally a set of ceremonial actions, assembling the group, heightening its emotions, and focusing its members on symbols of their common belongingness. In this context a punishment ceremony creates social solidarity.

So, I won't try to use religion to either defend or disparage Bill Clinton's actions. I'm also not so naive as to believe that Republicans have any purpose for regurgitating Bill's past transgressions other than as a means of harming his wife's candidacy. That's hardly a noble endeavor, especially since they fail to equally disparage former Republican House Speaker Hastert for his own transgressions while in a roll of party leadership. They were so serious that they led to a conviction and prison sentence. Clinton broke no actual laws and the major harm done was to his own marriage and to Miss Lewinsky's reputation, thanks to all of the publicity pushed by conservatives. Another case of Republican "Do as I say, not as I do." policies.

If the Bible grants Clinton any refuge other than offering penance through prayer, so be it.
